Gas Safe Registered

Ormond Pipework Services Ltd is one of the few line stopping specialists offering the "Squeeze Off" method.

We offer specialist gas and water Squeezing Off services directly for customers in all industries, and as specialist subcontractors for commercial gas & mechanical engineers.

The Squeeze Off method of isolation is typically used by utility companies on the network side of the meter. We are one of a small number of specialist contractors in the country who are experienced in using this method on the end users’ side of the gas meter.

What is Squeezing Off?

Squeezing Off is a method of line stopping that allows temporary isolation of underground MDPE gas or water pipework to enable pipework intervention, for modification, repairs or maintenance.

It is required where there is no viable means of isolating the supply without large scale disruption. Normally this would require large sections of pipework to be tested and purged with extended downtime and excessive cost.

The Squeeze Off method of line stopping is a much faster alternative that avoids costly downtime and disruption.

This method of isolation can be used on all underground MDPE pipe, for both gas and water, and on all pipe sizes up to 300mm diameter and up to 2 Bar pressure.

Our Squeeze Off procedure

The Squeeze Off method of pipe isolation can only be used on MDPE, or PE as it is commonly known.

One of the many advantages of this versatile pipe is its ability to return to its original shape after it has been compressed. This allows for specialist mechanical or hydraulic clamps to be used to compress ("squeeze") the inner walls of the pipe together to form a seal, and stop the flow of gas or water.

Stops on the clamps are set to a pre-determined point depending on the diameter and SDR rating of the pipe to prevent over compressing and splitting the pipe edges.

Depending on the works required, multiple squeeze-offs can be performed to isolate both upstream, downstream and tee sections.

Should a flow be required around the isolation points, a bypass can be installed.

After safety checks have been carried out, and the flow of gas or water is confirmed to be off, then work can begin on the isolated section.

On completion of the works, the clamps are released and removed and the MDPE pipe slowly returns to its original shape. Re-rounding clamps can be used which are left in place for around 10 minutes to speed the re-shaping.

Once complete the squeeze of area is marked on the pipe, as it is important not to squeeze the same area twice.

Health and safety

As with all our operations we take health and safety seriously and ensure all the team are fully aware of their role in the works, and have the required experience and qualifications.

We carry out a site survey before the works begin and check the equipment for safe operation before arrival on site.
