Bagging Off: Water treatment plant
BAGGING OFF CASE STUDY
Water treatment plant, Hull

Client: Water treatment plant, Hull
About: Pioneers in extracting natural gas from sewage, this government-funded water treatment plant based in Hull is a trusted client of Ormond Pipework Services.
The problem:
Ormond Pipework was called to test part of an existing gas installation. Upon surveying site, it was deemed there was a faulty valve which failed to isolate a 12” gas supply.
Due to the location of the faulty valve the gas for the entire site would have been closed off in order to carry out the original works, causing loss of production and major expenses.
Our solution:
To avoid costly downtime, our gas engineers recommended
bagging off the main.
Similar to line stopping, bagging off the gas supply effectively created temporary valves, which allowed for a new valve to be safely installed.
In this particular case, the gas pipework formed a ring main which negated the need for a bypass. The presence of a bypass is the difference between bagging off and line stopping.
Advantages to our process:
- No system down time
- Cost saving
- Avoid purging gas for the entire site
- Avoid gas testing the entire site
- Avoid wastage of gas
- Time efficient
