Client:  Warmco, on behalf of Sebden Steel Services, Manchester
About:
Sebden are a manufacturer of steel based in Manchester and contracted Warmo to install gas fuelled heaters in their plant.

The problem:Sebden steel were in the process of having new air heaters installed. In order to fit the new heaters, alterations to the existing gas pipework were required. To safely make the alterations, required purging of the gas pipeline. However, there was no purge point on the existing pipework.

Warmco called in Ormond Pipework Services, one of the UK's leading hot tapping contractors, to undertake the live tapping works and install a new purge point.

Our solution: To check if the pipe was thicker than the minimum 3.7mm, our engineers first carried out an ultrasonic thickness test. We then began welding a new connection onto the 4” gas main. A pressure test was then issued to search for leaks on the weld and valve. Once the safety checks were complete, our engineers attached the under-pressure drill and began hot tapping the new gas connection.

Finally, a safety blank was connected to avoid leaving an open end.
