Hot Tapping On Gas Pipework : Mansfield Hospital
Client: Mansfield Hospital
About: Mansfield Hospital were undergoing works to a boiler house and have trusted Ormond Pipework Services Ltd for our hot tapping services.
The problem:
Mansfield Hospital required a 2” on 6” branch from their existing gas main, in order to supply a new boiler.
Turning off the gas supply was not possible due to the hospital's ongoing requirement for ambient temperature and hot water.
To keep the system live, the commercial gas engineers at Ormond Pipework Services Ltd were brought in to install the new connection.
Our solution:
An ultrasonic thickness test was carried out to confirm if the existing pipework was safe to weld onto.
The minimum thickness allowable for welding onto live systems is 3.2mm.
A profiled 2” saddle was then welded onto the 6” gas main.
We tested the integrity of the weld by pressuring the connection to 3bar.
Upon the successful pressure test, the under pressure drill was fitted to the gas valve.
Once the drilling was complete a safety plug was fitted into the new valve.
The advantage of hot tapping the connection in this case was that Mansfield’s hospital gas supply remained live throughout the works.
Tasks involved:
Hot tapping / under pressure drilling on gas
Live tapping on 3” mild steel pipework
