Client: Transvac Systems Ltd, Derbyshire

The problem:

Employees at Transvac Systems Ltd reported a smell of gas, who then contacted the national gas emergency services.

A national gas engineer attended site and confirmed a leak, therefore the gas supply to the entire site was closed off at the primary meter.

The leak was caused by corrosion, which formed as a result of underground steel pipework not having anti-corrosion tape applied.

Not applying anti corrosion tape to underground steel pipework violates Gas Safe regulations and significantly reduces the life expectancy of the installation.

In order to fix the gas leak, Transvac required the assistance of commercial gas engineers Ormond Pipework Services.

Our solution:

Our engineers first surveyed the site to identify from which leg the meter was leaking. This was done by isolating and pressure testing different sections of the pipework.

By identifying the precise location of the leak, we were able to instruct the engineering contractors exactly where to excavate, keeping costs and disruption to a minimum.

Due to the original installation being unprotected from corrosion, we replaced the entire 50-meter section from the gas meter to the entry point of the building.

MDPE was used due to its long-life expectancy, and low cost. We are experienced gas MDPE fitters and always keep in line with Gas Safe standards.

Once the installation was complete, a commercial gas tightness test and indirect purge was undertaken.

We then checked each appliance fired up correctly, confirming the purge to gas was successful.

Finally, a Gas Safe certificate was issued, ensuring the commercial gas pipework was ready to use.
